Welcome to our landing page of the poker hand rankings. It’s the first thing you will need to learn when playing any form of poker, because without it you will have no clue if your card combination is any better than that of your opponents.
The goal in each hand of poker is to make the highest 5-card combination, this way you will win the pot when it comes to a showdown. The other way of winning a hand is by bluffing, but then it’s still useful to be able to put your opponent on a weak or strong hand.
Hand Rankings The value of poker hands is determined by how rare or common it is to be dealt them, with the most common hands valued lower than the rarer hands. The complete list of poker hands is as follows, in increasing order of scarcity.
There are a total of 10 poker hands you can make using 5 cards from a 52 card deck. The highest ranking poker card is the Ace and the lowest is the 2. To make the highest 5 card combination, you will need a 10, Jack, Queen, King and Ace, all of the same suit. This combination is called a Royal Flush and is the best and unbeatable hand in poker. On average, you will need to play over a quarter million hands to hit a Royal Flush (so don’t expect to see this one come by any time soon and be extremely happy when it does).
The lowest ranked poker hand is the so called Ace High, a5 card combination in which your highest card is an Ace and none of the other cards match with each other in any meaningful way. Generally this is not a hand you should be aiming for in poker, although in some hi-lo variations of poker the lowest card combination wins the pot.
Here’s some advice if you plan on playing Texas Hold'em poker: try to aim for a straight and/or flush combination, as these hands can be very deceptive and generate big pots in which they are often the best hand.
